My life
(by Paul Hughes)
I lived a quiet and somewhat sheltered life, next poem
till I was just 19 years old.
I didn't go out to drink too much,
or go anywhere near discos.
It wasn't easy trying to get about,
being from a rural part of Armagh
as soon as I passed my driving test I went out
and bought a car.
It was, my ticket to freedom
to travel up and down Irelands shores
to get about from A to B,
I became a rebel to the core!
this car it was a metro
out of it I got some sport
with it's 1litre engine and four speed box
yon wheels threw up some dirt.
With a top speed of 80
on the main roads I hadn't a hope
but on the little back roads of Ireland,
yer man in the BM
would you believe he couldn't keep up?
Well just last summer,
I was round by Sligo
and I met this wee girl called 'Joan'
she lived on the shores of Erin's isle,
in a wee town called Inniscrone.
She asked if she could join me,
on my travels around
says I aye! Sure C'mon ahead hop in.
Well I burned rubber as I took of spinning
in the direction of Mayo.
On down through Galway headed for cork,
this wee girl, she was good fun!
To cut a long story short
when I left her back home she said
"thanks very much for the lovely trip"
she hopped out of the car and waved bye,bye
and I never even got a kiss.
it was late this night
and the moon was bright in the sky
what happened next you 'll never believe
but it's true, honest that's right.
In my usual manor and fashion
I was booting it down by Enniskillen
with a cow on the road and a crash and a bang
I'm lucky I'm not the one that was killed.
This wee metro, I had to scrap her
and you know I miss her yet
although it never looked like much
at least it got me about.
